A singer who became world famous without a single album to his credit.A singer who has brought the power of words back to Punjabi Music Scene. A singer who writes and composes on his own, a singer who is well read and learned, a singer who has finally come out with an album and has broken all records of sale and proved that if you have content to sell, it will sell and people will buy original if its good. A champion in his own right Satinder Sartaaj has come out with his debut album aptly titled “Sartaaj” amidst millions of expectations. So, did he fulfill the expectations? I cant say about the poepl, but will like to give my two cents for what they are worth.
After listening to the album so many times, i can say that Heeriye Fakeeriye is my fave track in the album. Just brilliant. The album has been given a commercial treatment, Probably to reach a wider audience. New comers will love it, as its fresh, but the old fans will find Satinder following the popular music track. Not unique anymore. One more album from Satinder in the same treatment will result in a complete break. Or maybe he has something up his sleeve. Judging the fact that his ace track “Motia” isnt on the album, he has still kept the good stuff for next album.
Apart from the beginning couplets Sai is my least fave track. When Satinder sings it live, this track becomes other worldly. In the album it seems like any other random track, the composition is also very different in the album.
Filhaal sounds very good. Its not the same as the original Live track, but it stands out on its own, as to me this track seems to have got the best music on the album. But i found a huge gap between the original song, and this one.. The live track is as if a celebration of a life well lived. The album track has a nostalgic and sad feel to it. I like both of them.
Same goes for Jitt De Nishan… you have to see Satinder performing this song Live, only then you will understand what i mean.. But even in the album, the song seems pretty cool.
All the other tracks are average. “Dill pehlan jeha Nahi reha” had a far far better composition and music in Live. In the album, the song seems like a sad and the most pessimistic track. In truth when Sartaj sings it, he adds a positive feel to it, as if there is hope at the end of the tunnel. This also reflects in the last stanza. But in the album, the songs seems like a desperate rant from a pessimist.
Gall Tajurbe Walli stands as the second least fave track. There are no ups and downs in this track anymore. The real song had lots of tempo changes. The song as of now is quite plane and straight.. the music is so overpowering that it almost kills the lyrics.
Paani Panjan Darayawan Wala was the first track that i heard from Sartaaj’s side, so it has always been an adored track from my side, and i didnt like the musical treatment. Its too commercial now.
Nikki jehi Kudi is average just as the original. I never found this track appealing and it stays the same way in the album.
Ammi…. I wish the song was composed more on the track of Heeriye Fakeeriye, otherwise its good. For instance 3:30 has a great musical arrangement, but does it go with the emotions of Ammi? To me it sounds more like a Hindi Movie Romantic Ballad.
Sab te Laago seems like an unwanted track. As if Satinder wrote it just for the album. Music is simply too loud here.
Looking from a wider perspective, this might work for Satinder. He now has two things to offer: One is Pop treated music album, Two, thrashing Live performance. So fans might always be dying to get both all the time. One thing is sure, he has to take the next step very wisely. What does he want to be famous for? His unique style? For his Live performances? or just Lyrics?

I think Bobby ji u tried to differ b/w Live performance and the album……But if u ask a person like me who has not seen Sartaj’s live performance and straightaway listened to the audio, they will definitely say The album is just great.
I mean to say Album will always differ from the live one coz Album is a more of commercialised thing.
Yes, i did know that my experience of Live performance might bias my leanings. Thats why i have summarized the review by posing a question of which approach does Sartaj want to follow. This becomes an important issue in the light of the facts that the songs in album have different compositions and tempos from the original compositions. Some songs, as i have said, are good on both ends, some have demoted, and Heeriye Fakeriye has been enhanced.
I think this is a fair review of the album by Satinder Sartaj. I was part of his Mehfil-e-Sartaj in sydney. Songs like Jitt De nishan, dil pehla jeha ni reha, Sain had a different feel and a different zeal that made the aura a bit wide and entertaining. But the album concentrated more on giving the songs a commercial feel rather than maintaining and improving the originality. I found the live recorded albums bit better than this one.
Sartaj’s poetry is the main focus in his performance, music kind of seemed to be over ruling in the album. But on the whole, I still rate the album 8 out of 10. It was just that I expected too much out of his studio recording. A man sustaining the folk tunes and fusing sufism in it is surely different and hope he has lots of interesting stuff in the pipeline to keep us entertained.

Thanks for liking the review. I intended to be honest and its good to know that others feel the same :D
i know its late…….kyonki album release hoyi nu kafi time ho gaya hai……..par mai eh review ajj parhiya.I think this is a very fair review…..these days everyone is trying to flatter mr sartaj…..no doubt he is a good singer but in this album there r few drawbacks (and its not much appealing like his live perfomances).I totally agree with your review and Karandeep singh. Hope in future u will alwayz dare to write u r honest opinion on every topic.
GOOD LUCK
A Spat is Spat and a Brick is Brick..
”MERA SAI SARTAJ SAI” i love u sartaj ji mai tuhada bahut vada fan ha maiwe de vich te marde dum tak nahi 7 janama tak rahaga i love ur song i love ur singig i love ur styils I LOVE U ALL SARTAJ JI mai vi gauda ha sufi song hi par kash mai tuhde to sikhiya le sakda mera eh darim hai
Satinder Sartaj is really SARTAJ
i think he should only concentrate to his singing which is the only best feature of his. writing part seems more often a ‘tukbandi’ though he uses wise words to emotionally capture the audience. this is the only reason, when it is recorded in the studio, he has to low down the tone, because there are some limits in studio and a fixed stream to sing withing while in live he can play with strings as well as words. He must completely board the boat of singing and he could get better lyrics from various veteran and young lyricist, poets. As he is now not at all singing any sufi stuff, else he can get them from legendary classic sufi fakirs as well as many contemporary poets are writing poetry with the essence of Sufism.
Dear All, Could anyone tell me the contact no. of Sartaj Baiji as one of my poet friends has great stuff for him. He has been sung by one of the better singers in Canada……….
I think there is a huge differenc in llistening to an album and wathcing live performance.
in live performance you can see the emotions and the mood of singer and the audience. the smile on the face, jaddo of your eyes, your gestures and entusiasm and your ability to raise the tempo , your clothes, your personlity and the way you respond to applause and the involvement of the crowd make such a feast for leyour ears and your soul that you remember all your life and wonder at God’s own virtues which He has placed in every human being. looking at from a spirtual angle it is God’s own performance.sabh ghat Ram bole Rama bole Ram bina ko bole re.( i wish i could type this in punjabi, can some one guide me how to write your comments in Punjabi?)
we take credit for our achievement and it is very good for your ego but if u give credit to Him you will remain humble.
speaking sweetly and being humble is essence of all virtues. As Guru Nanak sahib says” MTHAT NIVEEN NANKA GUN CHAGIAIAN TAT.
Satinder Sartaj,’ performance is so unique and soul stirring that he has given new meaning to ma boli.
my best wishes are with him and i am sure he will continue to excell and spell bound his admirers.
There always is a difference in Live Concert and a Studio Album and the difference can not be ignored. Lets see what kind of approach will he take for his next album. That will make matters more permanent.
