Punjaban – Miss Pooja’s Film – Review

Punjaban Review Miss PoojaPunjaban, Love Rules Heart, is the film which was supposed to be a major hit, but it fell short of its run. Perhaps because too much was expected from the film or perhaps because it was delayed beyond means. But in truth, the film is not that bad, it surely deserved a better run and should have been praised for being a female oriented film.

Miss Pooja has really done a good job when it comes to acting.  She has portrayed two characters in the film, Gurjot (a decent but confident girl with moral leanings and love for the family and relations) and Preet (jubilant, jolly, bubbly and straight forward girl with extrovert nature). The amazing aspect of Pooja’s acting is that the viewers actually see Gurjot and Preet as two different persons, not even once the two characters clash with each other’s nature. Pooja’s dialog delivery varies for both characters and so does her body language and her mannerisms. This is not an easy thing to do in front of the camera. Miss Pooja must be applauded for her talent. The best scene from her is the one where she calls up Ikki to tell her that Preet is dead. A job well done.

It has been pointed out that as the character of Preet, Pooja speaks like a child, but it has to be understood that it’s a trait of Preet’s nature. She takes nothing serious and is kid enough to roam around with her sister’s would be husband.

Both the heroes of the film played their parts well, but Attar Habib impresses the most in the film. He has acted very well and to the point in the film. On the other hand the whole CM family including Attar doesn’t act like a CM family at all. The whole CM family falls short of the premise.

Lehri did well and is the most entertaining aspect of the film, but his role has no significance. His role serves no real purpose in the film and if you even take him out, film won’t miss anything apart from his comedy. If Lehri was to be the comic relief in the film, the story writer should have created a reason behind his existence. Just because he is a servant in the house, it doesn’t mean that he can have 5 comic scenes. It should logically follow.  The same stands true for the character of “Fattu”.

Miss Pooja film Punjaban lighting issue

Rana Ranbir has acted his character well, but there are times when it reaches extreme. Sometimes his voice is too loud than what seems low toned on the screen. Perhaps a mixing issue. The actor, who portrayed Hira, was the best as he did his role most convincingly.

Music of the film is average, nothing too good, nothing too bad and it just stays on the surface, so does the background score. Costumes are well, but sometimes in Preet’s case things go a little bit awkward. Make-up is very good in the film and Miss Pooja looks refreshing in the whole film.

Cinematography and editing, both are terrible in the film, locations are unimpressive. Although it’s understandable that this was an urban film and there’s not much to be done in closed spaces, but still, the perspectives can be playful, lights can be better. Editing, as always is.. bad, there is no continuity in the film and the jerks, which are almost a trademark of Punjabi Cinema are plenty. Scenes shift with jerk and at times the dialogues overlap as well. The worst is the scene where the inspector asks Gurjot for her statement at her home. Watch it and you will know what we are pointing at.

Miss Pooja Punjaban Plot Issue

Plot of the film takes quite some time to reveal itself. The whole idea behind Gurjot and Preeti’s identity is very intriguing but it couldn’t get justified on screen. The biggest hindrance was perhaps the big number of offshoot plots. There were so many things in the story that took too much time to reveal themselves and the main story lags during those sequences. The worse is that most of these stories are left behind in the film and are left unclear. What happens to the earlier girlfriend of Karan? She meets Pooja in jail, but is that all? What about the other cell mates? What happens to the villain Hira?

And then there is the Ipod paradox. In a flashback Gurjot mentions that this ipod is mine. So, as the image explains, the events in Punjaban actually happen 5 years in the future? Well, that’s the first time I have seen a Punjabi movie which is set in future. Either that or the film makers consider the audience to be dumb enough to think about such details.

Miss Pooja Film Punjaban Ipod Issue

Beside the Ipod issue, there are many unwanted and pointless aspects in the story. For instance who was the girl who meets Fattu in the beginning at village house? What was her purpose in the whole film? Maybe she was meant to be Lehri’s love interest, but nothing is depicted in the film. What was the idea behind gifting the dog to Gurjot? What was the purpose of Ikki’s younger brother? How was Ikki’s father reconciled regarding the case of Gurjot. How come Gurjot was singing in jail at the midnight? Aren’t prisoners locked up in their cells at night? Why didn’t Gollu spoke against Karan in the court? He could have single handedly proved everything regarding the character of Karan. How can Gurjot be such a good friend of Ikki without even telling him that she didn’t get married? Or without telling him that she murdered Karan?

Punjaban contains one thing that many other Punjabi films lack. Acting. Everyone in the film has acted out very well. Not a single actor has acted out of league, but the film falls short on its plot and technicalities. This could have been a very good floater for Miss Pooja’s acting debut, but now it seems that the failure of Punjaban will also affect her next film Channa Sachi Muchi.

havnet read the review yet as am going to see the film in a day or two, i dun wish to read the story before hand and also doesnt want that the review should bias my viewpoint, will hit it soon

  4. navtej sandhu says:

What a review !! Doodh ke doodh, paani ka paani !! Main thing is that bad screenplay was the MAJOR culprit !!

    • rane says:

      thanks navtej bhaaji :)

      • Saru Saini says:

Mr. Sandhu, if you hv such knowledge of Screenplay writing….why not attempt a film rather than organizing film festivals of such films only….your were totally biased views as the film has a wonderful smooth story telling and it binds you through out. Writing such things can’t help you in your connections in the film industry….be genuine in your approach….a friendly suggestion…..as such films occur rarely and only with a vision by the team to better the quality of Punjabi Cinema otherwise they could also have added routine gimmicks like illogical action, double meaning comedy etc etc and above all a Hero Centric subject that would have been more safe bet commercially but they throughout concentrated on the subject of the film minus outdated gimmicks that always sent the audiences away from Punjabi Cinema…Saru Saini.

You definitely seem to be from the crew of this film and thats why you seem so restless in all your posts, well i dont have much to say but i believe you should learn how to take criticism positively and use it in a constructive way and am sorry but your comments seem rather exaggerated about the movie, it was good but not as good as you are portraying it to be. But thats your own personal view and that i respect but similarly, you should also learn to respect others’ point of views and pointing Mr. Sandhu and his personal initiatives, you yourself hasnt done a very professional n sensitive thing, i wonder where the genuine and professional approach goes when it comes to yourself.

    • joban says:

No doubt about that, cinematography was at its worse.

      • surider says:

I think u r here to critisize, maybe for some personal reasons, how does a layman know about cinematography.Sometimes director, sometimes acting, sometimes screenplay. It was a beautiful film overall in all aspects.

Mr Rane , you must have watched the film with pirated VCD that is why you are pointing to the poor lighting in the film whereas I am myself from advertising world and found that Film’s Camera work and lighting was at par with any good Bollywood movie and I have never seen such glamorous presentation even in the punjabi films of great cameraman Manmohan Singh. Please watch in a theatre and take Mr. Navtej Sandhu along so that you can brainstorm with each other and come to a conclusion that you watched the film with a biased mind. Also…you should have read your earlier views posted on the Panjaban Thread before writing this review….you people are writing for the sake of it and also have this notion that criticizing a film will prove your intelligence but you must remember, film is a mass medium and the people who have neutrally watched it have immensely liked the film and I agree as such that a film can’t appeal to everyone equally but the technical aspects pointed by you, show your biased approach…Best Of Luck…Wait for the release of Mel Karade Rabba, Channa Sachi Muchi, Ik Kuri Punjab Di……….and carry on ……

    • rane says:

First off, it’s Miss Rane =) Secondly, we received the DVD copy of the film at our PP office from courier for review and believe me i have the ability to distinguish a DVD Rip from a CAM Rip. And did you see the screenshots? Bad print or not, what about the nose shadow shot that i posted? Its one thing to make a post with a lot of pedantic words and it’s another thing to post something with proper foundations… If the film was so brilliant at all the technicalities what about the Ipod issue? What about that other female character? What about the dialog overlaps? I have posted so many questions, why dont you answer them all and prove me wrong.

Did you even read the review seriously, a lot of points have been praised and we seriously believe that it’s a wonderful film. A far far better film than many other contemporary Punjabi films, but it fell on a sad fate. Miss Pooja has really done a great job in the film. And what about my comments in Miss Pooja thread? I have always appreciated her work and have always stood for the righteous.

Please read the review carefully before pointing fingers. My review is mine, i wrote what i thought was right. And well… i will keep writing reviews. We are not doing this just for the heck of it. We are doing it coz we seriously think that Punjabi Cinema should be criticized in balance.. all the positives and negatives should be evaluated. In fact we invite you to write a review for the film and we will happily submit it under your name. Just make it unbiased and in English.. thats all my lord, and i rest my case.

      • joban says:

well said Rane, i dun think anything else needs to be said now, I appreciate the coolness of your tone despite of mr./ms. Saini’s rude and harsh remarks.

        • surider says:

First of all I don’t think panjaban di DVD aa gaye hai.Must watched a pirated c.d ,which is very bad.Frm where did u get it .

  12. navtej sandhu says:

    (2) Tusi keha ke my views are biased, plz go in the thread PANJABN & read my review. MIMNE was the FIRST POSITIVE review of the movie coz i saw it in the THEATRE & i liked the movie !! I didn’t wrote anything for the sake of it, i dn’t need to !! Mere layi Mr. Gaurav Trehan ji vi ohne hi respectful ne jine koi hor director !! I have myself honoured Mr. Trehan in my Film Festival for Hashar !!

    (3) About bad screenplay, i still stand on my point with addition of BAD editing-some portion of post-production also !! As Ms. Rane has pointed out about so many characters missing inbetween, THAT is the example of bad screenplay !! Otherwise, there is NOTHING WRONG with the story line !!

    (4) U also said “I have never seen such glamorous presentation even in the punjabi films of great cameraman Manmohan Singh” . . . i think tuhade es byaan ton baad mera kuch kehna about UR thought, galat hoyega !!
Tusi keha “be genuine in your approach…”, i dn’t need to take certificate from ANY1 about my genuinety janaab.

Now i will wait for ur NEXT post.

  15. joban says:

Punjabiportal is the best when it comes to writing reviews, be it Hindi movies or Punjabi movies. Purely unbiased, professional and aesthetic. I have also seen the movie and i agree with each and every bit of the article. Miss pooja did a good job being a new comer and justified her double roles excellentl, makeup was good, costumes were pathetic at times, lightening (as being pointed out) was poor and camera shoots were so awkward, zooming in and out and full of jerks. Someone else is speaking and the cameras is on someone else, totally out of sense !!

Ather Habib was the saving grace of the film according to me, Punjabi film industry has got a perfect new face in him, i would love to see him in the Punjabi movies.

  16. Saru Saini says:

Bobby ji…. Respect your views… their was nothing personal in my comments on Mr. Navtej except the fact that I was just reminding our members of our targets through this portal ….. otherwise anybody can be right or wrong and if we don’t tell the person or listen our self than the acts can be repeated….. my only drawback is that I get too involved in my thoughts and wish to suggest the friends around if they are right or wrong but it is up to them to agree to a suggestion or not….if I am spending my time and thoughts on this issue than I need to have the rights to do this….. and as a admin of this portal a heartiest BEST OF LUCK to you…. I will not bother you or any other member again after this post….Saru Saini

Joban Bajwa…. I wish if I could be a member of the crew of Punjaban as in that case the things would have been more clear to me and I would have put forward all the facts and figures about the business of the film before you all friends. You found me restless in my posts as I don’t come to this portal to kill my time but to kill the negativity around….still those were your thoughts and I respect every body’s point of view…..You can’t doubt my tastes and likings as I also have not done that except for the business aspect of the film which I found to be based on speculations….just that.

Navtej ji…… You need not wait for my post……please read the above….Saru Saini

    • rane says:

Thats a very nice post from you Saru ji, but i guess over here at Articles, you should have addressed the post to me and not Bobby. I was expecting to have some healthy discussion with you on the film. I’m not concerned about the business it did and the box office stats, my review was based purely on its aesthetic and technical values.

Apart from the hypothetical thesis and box office stats stand the presentable and evaluative aspects of the film, the clear enough mistakes which are the basis of the failure of Punjaban on technical level, especially the plot. The most evident are Ipod and the female character flaws.

I dont have any doubt that you have very good sense of criticism about you, but being overtly positive is just like being overtly negative. I wish you to call a brick a brick and a diamond a diamond =) Lets all be neutral… no lovers or haters

      • Saru Saini says:

Miss Rane……Judging your eager expectation to have a ‘Healthy Discussion’ regarding the film and not convinced by some points pointed out by you in your review, I am posting this reply, however I promised Mr. Bobby for not following this thread anymore. Secondly I don’t know whom to address where, being new to this portal…so kindly excuse for this….. Thanks for appreciating my sense of Criticism but I must point out that neither I am overtly positive nor negative, I just go by my sense of logic and understanding a film or situation…so let’s carry on…this is not my review but reply to yours….for which I have researched on the specific points before replying……..All replies are based on the narrative of the film :

        1. Coming to the ‘Major Flaw’ pointed by you is the I-POD issue which I would like to clarify with facts. I-Pod was launched by Apple Company on 23rd October,2001(Source : I-Pod Wikipedia) and the family of Jot and Preet would have got it by December,2001 as they are a rich enough to afford it at any time and cost…. and the script of the film was in present….. So if we take that School Dress Flashback scene was in 2001, a gap of 9 years till present 2010 is enough to believe, as both the girls are shown in grown up age in school, maybe they are in Plus One (Class) in their 16th Year of age and in present 2010 they are of 24 years old….so where is the flaw. We should first check the facts before commenting that “this is the first film seen by me set in future”.

        2. Regarding Karan’s girlfriend, if you watch the film carefully, Golu tells Jot that Simran was sent to jail for three years in Gaban case due to Karan’s reporting to her office about the money she lent to Karan. After which we saw her meeting Jot in Jail…Wishing her victory in life and court case on Holi …what else we expect…it was not a story about Simran….she was a part of Karan’s life who was no more in the film when she is shown undergoing imprisonment…

        3. All the main characters in the jail especially Preet (Jail’s) are shown and established for establishing the circumstances in Jot’s life who faces all odds deciding about her love life after two big incidents in her life, Preet’s Murder and her killing Karan. In Himachal Jail ( and in most of the jails in India),the location in the film, females are not always kept in barracks, they have no dress code …..and prisoners in all jails, whether male or female, do sing/dance/play games, daily, so what’s wrong with this…..

4.In his last scene in the film, Hira is shown giving statement in Jail…. He was not a villain in this film, but a hard money lender and gambling den owner who can go to any extent for recovering his money. His connection in the film was only Karan and after Karan’s death what do we expect him to do….his character went as per the plot of the film…… neither more nor less.

5.The girl shown with Fattu lives in Jot’s nani’s house with her mother and she often visits Jot and Preet’s city home with Fattu. The makers have used her and her first scene in the village to establish the village backdrop of Jot and Preet’s family where Fattu goes to collect the Theka (the contract money for leasing the farm land), that’s what was shown….. She was a part of the plot and character building of main characters and added to the ambience of a rich and happy family….. She was never a part of the main plot for us to expect more from her….. The story clearly establishes the main characters and culminates them properly…… Not a single character was left high and dry…… otherwise anyone could have also pointed out even about the constable in Jail with a couple of scenes….that what happened to him.

        6. The younger brother of Ikki was a part of rich but down to earth family of a CM…… where a mother in spite of being CM’s wife, is telling to cook herself the favorite dish of his son ….. and the younger brother gifting his favorite puppy for his ‘to be bhabhi’….. the dog gifting by Ikki was beautifully handled with Ikki’s brother telling Jot outside jail that same puppy will come back with you, showing his faith that she will come out of jail and will surely come to their home as bride of his brother….. and the same thing is shown in the last scene of the film….what else are sub-plots and actions for….establishing a point and then culminating it, AS established. Reconciling of Ikki’s father was clearly shown in their last scene together, and there is no rocket science in understanding the change of Heart of a loving and God fearing father giving in to his son’s wishes…..for whom he is very ambitious too.

        7. How could Golu single handedly prove Karan’s involvement in Preet’s Murder when he has no proof …..and he does not have any exact clue about the incident of Preet’s Murder as clearly established in the film….. which is why he repeatedly tells Jot that there is No Evidence against Karan, the only thing courts depend upon for a Judgment…… He only knew and spoke about his past in the court….so again wrong assumption and criticism.

        8. Jot and Ikki’s relation as friends is very sweet and they just talked on phone after her study is over and that too is shown whenever it happens. She meets Ikki only after Preet’s wedding so how could she tell him about the incident. Her character is of a reserved girl. When Jot goes to Preet’s house with Dadi, Ikki is away to Canada and tells her on Phone that he will start right away but in the meantime Karan is murdered by Jot. So,they meet in Police Station after Karan’s Murder and she admits it and agrees to let him fight her case in the court only because ‘they are friends’….. their relation is well established, very smoothly and gradually.

Miss Rane ….As a friend, I personally suggest you to watch the film again keeping my Replies in mind…..I am not replying to any of your pin-points regarding Cinematography or Lighting or Sound Overlaps as I personally feel you should have watched the film in a Theater as I found no such flaw in the theater screening…… I yesterday got a copy of film’s pirated DVD that was a camera print with very low quality….. the same camera print is on net, which you must have watched….. I wonder who is the well wisher of this film who is sending you a pirated DVD for review even before it’s official release on DVD…..excuse me if I sound over concerned about this film …. this exercise is not for a film but for a proper analysis of our criticism…..as… end of the day…we both and our members may also gain from it…. 19. drgurtej says:

I PP members making more efforts to discuss and research about this movie than the members of the film team, First half concept is copied from kajol’s movie DUSHMAN (Copy Of hollywood film) and second half is ash’s movie PROVOKED, if you watch both movies and than you will have another view what level you wanna give to this movie, i am not comparing miss pooja’s acting with kajol ( just the character development) and PROVOKED is based on true story again character development is main flaw in the second half of punjaban, only because its not original. Miss Pooja’s did good in her first film as actress.( above mentioned films shows the bond between twin sisters and the other film shows the circumstances in details- how and why a punjabi girl will burn someone alive-(PROVOKED is a true story of punjabi girl who really burned her husband alive and went to jail- sentenced for 12 years- after 3-4 years she won the case and came out. So main and only weak point is not having original story……..

  20. Saru Saini says:

Dr Gurtej….. Really astonished to see your knowledge about films and surprised by your comparison of these films with Punjaban’s script ….. having myself watched all the three films…… the only similarities as pointed by you are that the first film is about two sisters…..does that mean any sisterly love shown in a film is a take off from Dushman… don’t we have similar characters and situations around us in our society …. Dushman was not about a triangle relation happening in a big joint family(as shown in Punjaban) but just a revenge story of a sister whose another sister is raped by the villain……and in Provoked, Ash kills her husband but here Pooja kills her sister’s husband as he murdered her sister and left no evidence of it….. Both the films mentioned here had NO similarities of Characters or Incidents except that the first one had two sisters in double role and in the second film the negative character is burnt by the heroine…..do you think it is justified enough to copyright and patent the ‘Relations’ existing in our society to ‘Films’ made with these relations….can’t anyone make a film about sisterly love and call it original or if a female character burns alive a villain, will it be called a take off from Provoked only, whereas, don’t we read the newspapers with similar happenings, almost daily….let’s not try to put our intelligence to work just to prove that few characters/relations shown in one film are repeated in second film, making it a copy of the first as it’s obvious that in every ‘family film’ the characters shown will be the same as in any other ‘family film’…….As every home has ‘same relations’ but have ‘different characters, lifestyles and stories’ similarly these three films are totally different from each other in Story, Characterization and overall Presentation ……There are several other films made on sisterly love and about a woman’s revenge but they can’t be called ‘Similar”.

I would also like to request you to post the name of the third ‘Hollywood’ film from where the ‘climax’ of Punjaban has been taken, as mentioned by you in your review, to further clarify you on your Point Of View.

Mr. Bobby… A few words for you …I have a gut feeling that we are going overboard in discussing this particular film but I feel there should be a sense of responsibility while criticizing/commenting on a film as a Pro-critic, as this is a mass medium and most of our members are Punjabi cinema lovers like me.The Review of a Film has a great positive or negative impact on other readers, who are potential viewers of that film, and it is overtly negative if we are not justified in our comments. I think you are well aware of the fact that Posting personal comments about liking/dis-liking a film is totally different from writing a review, and here is a humble suggestion to do the needful about this concern of mine for the sake of Punjabi Cinema……Rest you are much experienced and have the discretion to accept or reject my suggestion…..Saru Saini.

Mr. Saini i appreciate your reply regarding the points raised by me. I have lots of answers for you as well and a lot of counter-statements to justify what i wrote. PP is going through some hosting issues and we will be free after a few days. The hosting need immediate attention and thus i haven’t been able to reply you properly, but i will do it ASAP. May be tomorrow. I still stand by my review.

      • Saru Saini says:

Miss Rane…. There is no hurry…you please settle the hosting issues first and then we can go further on the issues raised by you in your review, which were counter replied by me….my aim was never to make you back track on your review but to come up with justifications, backing your ‘criticizing’ points…as done by me….our approach may differ but our target is same…hope you understand…Saru Saini

I am not trying to prove anything here. I am aware that how much it will be difficult to make punjabi movie in the present time and prove it hit. I respect and appreciate the effort of punjaban film team as I can see their hard work done for the film.
With same respect and love anybody else have for punjabi films I went to watch this movie in melbourne multiplex like other people did (Not to entertain myself, just to appreciate the hardwork of the film team, specially the talent of Gaurav Trehan and Miss Pooja), Should not mention this but I am “audience” at last and I should have this right at least sharing my views regarding the film
Just for PP members- the ticket prize in melbourne for new film starts from $ 17, not cheap for the students studying and working hard (same way as every film team member has done the effort) here but still they used their money to watch this movie in multiplex because they love punjab and punjabi, otherwise they could easily purchase the pirated CD for $ 3 and enjoy any other entertaining film.
I never watch TV , but I watch movies all the time, every week (5-7 hollywood movies, 2-3 bollywood movies) to study them. This website made me “really aware’ that punjabi cinema needs support and support will come only if audience will be in theatres, so I respect PP site and the pp members giving me right directions and new views about punjabi cinema. I know that PP members including myself use harsh words sometime but great people (like Rana Ranbir Ji) know very well how to cope with our “not so qualified criticism” because we love them and they love us.
Now I am ready to watch every punjabi movie in the theatre without any discrimination. As punjabi film industry is growing up……….same way the audience for the punjabi movies( I mean myself as well) will take some time to critisize the films in accurate way.
MITTI film has similar concept with “Rang de Basanti” but I could not feel at any scene that something is taken from the other movie and watched it so many times … just original and totally different like Q. Tarantino does it.
Only one weak point about Mitti… I could not watch this movie with my friends…. then again I enjoyed sharing my views on PUNJABIPORTAL… and so many friends now…. to share and fight with………
Next time I will think thousand times to make my every word accurate before writing……. to critisize any punjabi movie if i am ‘really” critisizing ………

  22. Saru Saini says:

Dr Gurtej….. Really appreciate your views as this was my only concern….. and in any case if you have understood this concern the others may also follow suit and I am sure this will go a long way in achieving the target of PP members of popularizing Punjabi Cinema among today’s youth and our member friends…. Saru Saini.

I am new to this portal and I am surprised to read some of the reviews, comments and other discussions. What I gathered so far is that people can not take critism – positive or negative! Please keep ur cool. Nothing should nrither be taken personally not targetted at anyone.
I think everybody is doing great job. We need to encourage Punjabi film makers in every way we can otherwise very soon, you will see the end of this industry. Film reviews negative or positive are each person own views and film makers should learn from the same.
Saru Saini ji, please do not take it personally – there are other things ahead in the life.
Navtej ji, I really like to know more about your festival as I am from the USA but love my Punjab.

i watched the film on the first day…..and it was good…..i’ve not watched “hashar” but watched EKAM..but it is never near to punjaban ….punjaban is far more technically sound than ekam….
i can’t understand why we can’t have the high standards of punjabi movies like that of bollywood…
their worst movie is even better than a best punjabi movie if seen on the technical side…
we definately need some gud engineers ………
