So, at last after three days of excited waiting I managed to watch the first day first show of the film Mel Karade Rabba in Greater Union Cinema of the Melbourne and let me say that I really enjoyed it.
In Punjabi community/culture most marriages as a rule are set off through the fixed process or some traditional ceremonies like “Rok”, “Shagan” and “Mangani”. In case something goes wrong or some misunderstanding cultivates between the families of the to-be-bride and groom, it leads to the end of the relationship of the future husband and wife along with their families. The situation of the aforementioned ceremonies being performed, but the final destination of marriage/wedding not achieved, has been expressed in a successful and stylish way by the film director of Mel karade Rabba.
Attention – Story Spoiler – Dont read if you havent seen the film yet:
The film’s protagonist Rajveer Gill (Jimmy Shergill) is a college student who cannot pass entrance exams (It shows in the film that he has been trying for three years) but successfully manages to get the top results. Rajveer also goes ahead and takes part in fights with other student groups of his college. He also buys cups and trophies to make his mother feel proud of him as she is so proud of her late husband who was an army officer. So, a family pride story there.
The female protagonist Neeru Bajwa plays the role of Seerat “a decent Punjabi girl” who first sees Rajveer during a fight holding hockey stick in his hand. Rajveer goes through his “love at first sight” moment with neeru at the same time as well. Later on when Rajveer’s family tries to get his agreement for the marriage he denies first but agrees straight away when he comes to know that this is the same girl who saw him fighting. Rajveer and his family members go to the girl’s house so the boy and girl can see each other for first time. Seerat is aware of Rajveer’s true nature so she tries to inform her father as she knows what type of life partner should “not” be in her life but Rajveer handles the situation with skill. Seerat continues to make unsuccessful efforts to break this relationship and escape the marriage. On the other hand Rajveer successfully wins the heart of Seerat’s other relatives when he visits Seerat’s grandmother in village. During this visit Seerat observes the better side of Rajveer and stops her efforts to break the relationship and agrees to see Rajveer as her future husband.
And here comes somebody who makes girl’s father really aware regarding the bad side of Rajveer. Seerat’s father asks Rajveer to finish this relationship before the marriage without telling anybody and Rajveer does that. What happens after this is the rest of the film. Well, I didn’t want to let the whole cat out for you.
After doing Tera Mera Ki Rishta with film director Navanit Singh, Jimmy Shergill has developed good understanding with the film’s director and with his demands for the role of this character. He has given a winning performance; I might say his best one in a Punjabi movie. He shows full control over his acting and really looks fabulous in the whole film. The best scenes of the film in different circumstances like fighting, telling lies and emotional part have been shot well with the help of Jimmy Shergill’s talent. I believe to do his best for the role he also has change his hair style to look younger as the role demands, and hence the wooing girls should not be complaining after watching the movie.
Neeru Bajwa has done her job successfully as she has also given a winning performance of decent Punjabi girl. She looks great in sincerely chosen nice dresses and costumes. Makeup is also done well.
The surprise of the film is Gippy Grewal, who can be the future superstar of the Punjabi films as certainly he will improve his acting skills (this is expected of everyone after the first film) in the next film. But surely, he is really a “good one” in his first film and his first role and has the potential of making a very good actor.
Jaswinder Bhalla, Amar Noori, Bhotu shah and Kake shah provide necessary humor for the film and don’t stretch the length of the film. For supportive characters we have excellent star cast and the director has got the best from everyone.
Kudos to the films’ “steady pace” but “not too slow” continuity as it’s going to help the film win the race. Navaneet Singh has shown his talent of film direction in various ways. He has used 2 songs to give the best scenes of the film, absolutely improving the quality of the film. In most scenes one can feel that Navnait Singh has full control over whole film and he did not rush for any scene to get cool performance from every single actor of the film. I think he is the first director using comedians’ style and acting for the film and not their unnecessary jokes to stretch the length as we have seen in other films. He has brought fresh style and the Bollywood look in Mel Karade Rabba.
Camera work, art direction and shooting locations are perfect for the film. Film’s story and script is beautifully written for the above mentioned situations of the film. Songs are also used at appropriate scenes, and they help to move the story forward. You cannot leave the seat during the songs, which, to me is a huge achievement.
“Bomb hai bibi” is my favorite dialogue from the film. Daljit Dusanjh, who stars in the eagerly awaited “Lion of Punjab” introduces himself with Mel karade Rabba and that’s another surprise of the film. Mel Karade Rabba is a good example for the learners who wish to give really good films for Punjabi audience. Few reasons to watch this film in CINEMA HALL:
